Beer Review: Uerige Doppelsticke

Beer Review: Uerige Doppelsticke
Style: Altbier
ABV: 8.5%

Once upon a time, men were manly. With the recent rise of fragrant body sprays, manicures, and fancy pocketed jeans, men have taken a step backward in their responsibility to act like men…and we aim to correct this path.

Be a man. Drink a man’s beer.

Several things come to mind when we think of the word “manly”. Dick Butkus, splinters, dull razors, noodling, showering without soap, and chainsaw juggling are just a few of the manliest things in our world today. The mustachioed brewers at Uerige Obergarige Hausbrauerei in Germany have provided another item to add to this list; a single entry created to change our culture. They bring us: Uerige Doppelsticke. This tough beer contains a plethora of manly qualities. The lean, bottom-weighted bottle can easily fit in a holster or boot and is indispensable in a bar fight. The swingtop closure not only looks badass, but the metal hardware could be used to pick locks or make animal traps.  This is, no doubt, a man’s beer. And all of this before we even open the bottle. Uerige Doppelsticke is Germany’s interpretation of the classic Barlywine style. A malt-forward creation that will punch you in the jaw, but only while you’re looking. Let’s open this up:

Could this beer bottle be used to kill a man? Maybe. Maybe not. But way more maybe than not.

*Note: If you have trouble figuring out how to open this beer, you should put it down, drive to the store, and buy some wine coolers…and a skirt.
This man-beer is dark brown in body with a nice off-white cap. Light won’t penetrate this wonderful murkiness. When held to the light, you will only see tiny hockey players beating one another with their sticks. The smell is as complex as a woman; it just can’t make it’s mind up as to what it wants to smell like.   A wonderful whiff of sticky molasses, roasted malt, ripe dark fruit, and a touch of ripened banana are decipherable. The taste is even more interesting with the addition of floral citrus hop notes, a heavy malt backbone, hints of leather, booze, tobacco, and a grassy hop finish. This taste is BIG, yet not overpowering. This beer is wonderfully layered, allowing these intricate flavors to shine. The feel of this beer is thick and very smooth with medium carbonation which coats the entire palate.

Overall, Uerige Doppelsticke is a wonderful, astounding beer that will put hair on your chest and a confident smirk on your face.  Seek this beer out.  After your first sip, you can’t help but act like a grizzly man riding a buffalo.

You can find this manly beer at the following locations (ride your buffalo there for extra effect):

Colonial Wine & Spirits – Little Rock

Macadoodles – Springdale

Crush Wine Bar – North Little Rock

Flying Saucer – Little Rock

We gave this beer 4.5 Diamonds
