Cheers to everyone who participated the recent Fest of Ale! We all had a wonderful time drinking beer, discussing beer, and drinking beer. We were at table 4 (or was it 7 or 23?) under the Glidewell tent; pouring some of the best Belgian beers in Arkansas. Jonas had fun pouring Scaldis Prestige De Nuits and explaining the complicated aging process, trying to drive the fact that Burgundy barrels are hard to come by. Josh had fun pouring every other beer while Jonas hogged the De Nuits. You have to be careful with amazingly complex beer though – we saw some unfortunate ill-prepared flavornauts take a ride into new territory. We witnessed some uneasiness with De Nuits and a couple of other BIG beers, but they were few and far between. In those situations, we were always able to ask a few questions and step the taster over to a more suitable beer.
That’s OK though! The amazing and wonderful world of beer reflects all the colors in the tastebow. For those of you keeping track, that’s two new words: flavornauts and tastebow. Keep up. Some folks may start down the craft beer journey and take a break at IPA land, and stay there and enjoy it. Cheers to you! Other folks may wander over to Stouts and Porter Palace, staying a few years. Cheers to you! Then some folks roam further and discover places like Sour and Wild Ale country…. or Belgium. Cheers to those brave people.
Let’s move on to some interesting Belgian news, shall we? Has anyone heard of Vanberg & Dewulf? Probably not – and that’s just fine. All you need to know is this: these guys are awesome. They are an importer; a company that contracts and imports many many (many!) beers into the US and sells them to distributors. When V&D came to Arkansas, we officially became spoiled with world-class Belgian beer. We recently read about a Coast to Coast Toast that will be happening soon – and we want YOU to take part! Go get a Belgian beer and share it with some friends! Let’s not forget that we have some amazing Belgian beer here in Arkansas, and we don’t want it to go away.
And be sure to check out the articles about Scaldis Prestige De Nuits! We’ll provide our detailed thoughts on this beer very soon.
