Beer Review –  Hermitage Brewing Company Maltopia

Style: Scotch Ale / Wee heavy

ABV:  9%

Drink if you like: English toffee, pancakes with syrup, balanced beer and Scottish accents

All the way from San Jose we have Hermitage Brewing Company; a newer brewer who is pushing some delicious beer to Arkansas.   And with directions to the brewery that read “Corner of Phelan, at the end of the fenced in parking lot- look for the grain silo,” you know us Arkie folks can trust these good people.  This particular beer has cast a spell over us ARBB geeks.  Perhaps it is the charming style – wee heavy – that has us southerners under its enchantment… or the fact that we enjoy maple syrup on most things including bacon.  Either way, this high ABV beer was a pleasant surprise.  When we discovered that it had won 1st place gold in California’s state far (commercial craft brew competition) we nodded our heads in agreement.  That’s also when we learned that throwing back your head and drinking from a beer glass WHILE nodding your head in agreement tends to result in spilling the beer.  Let’s dive into this one, shall we?

CA State Champs!

Maltopia pours a reddish / sweet tea brown color with a decent foamy head showing.  While sticking your nose in its business you will notice notes of toffee, caramel, a vanilla you’d find in a good bourbon, what seems to come across as chocolate malt and some booze.   So far, it’s charming.  Take a nice long drink, and you will discover a very well balanced beer featuring flavors such as pancakes with syrup, toffee, plum, caramel, slight tobacco, a hidden smokiness, raisins, and something that reminds you of pepperidge farm cinnamon swirl bread.  It’s not too cloying – the hops come and do a good job of balancing in end of the taste.  Overall, this was a very enjoyable beer – just watch out for that high ABV… We suggest splitting a bomber or 3 with some friends while discussing the finer things in Razorback Football.

We gave this beer 4 Diamonds.
