Look into beer, and beer looks into you

Beer Review:  Stillwater Artisanal Ales Existent

Style: Saison

ABV: 7.4%

Drink if you like: blue cheese, tree fruits, and philosophic ponderings on morality.

Friedrich Nietzsche once said “You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist.”  This statement translates wonderfully in the craft beer world.  We each have one goal – flavorful, delicious beer – and we each have our own way of achieving that goal.  What is the better beer?  An IPA or Stout? How about a blend of thick, sweet imperial porter and light, effervescent and sour wheat ale?  The answer is “it does not exist.”

Whether you are a fan of the famous philosopher that graces this bottle of beer, or just a fan of good craft beer, you are in luck.  We have a beer than tastes good and inspires a debate about what “good” really is, followed by what “reality” is, and then after your 6th or 7th beer, what “is” is.  And we can’t forget the classic Nietzsche debate of “Why can’t guys rock mustaches like that anymore?”

Let’s immerse ourselves in the beer, shall we?

Existent pours beautifully with a thick, tight head capped on top of darker than expected nearly coffee colored beer.  Carefully place your nose (mind the ‘stache) and ponder the aromas of toast, earthy yeast, raisins, candy sugar, and perhaps some faint thoughts of fruity hops, green apple and pear.  This is where you start to pontificate about the beer style.  As you take a drink of the beer, you will experience another enjoyable surprise of subtle acidity among many flavors like chocolate, coffee grounds, some apple, banana, toffee, and other roasted malt notes.  You will find this beer is very entertaining for your taste buds and pairs well with philosophical musing on “what is flavor?”

I keep seeing Midtowne Wine & Spirits in Little Rock listed. Does anyone know where this is? I’ve googled and can’t find anything. I live in Midtown and was thinking it might be closer to me…
