Flavor to the rescue!

Summer is just around the corner. Not just summer, but an Arkansas summer. We all know what that means: thick, hot weather. While most of us reach for a Biff Light after mowing the lawn and fighting those blood-sucking mosquitoes, you should know there is a damn fine alternative: Stiegl Radler, from the maker’s of a beer we deemed the Arkansas Gateway Beer. We’ve all heard of a summer shandy – a mix of beer and lemonade that’s a seemingly southern traditional spin on a sweet tea and lemonade summer drink. Siegl Radler is the same thing – except perfected by those Austrian German speaking folks who have been drinking beer LONG before us southern folk enjoyed a cold one. It’s a combination of grapefruit soda and beer basically…. And while that seems strange, we are here to tell you it is a PERFECT combination. Peanut butter and jelly, razorback football and calling the hogs, Stiegl Radler and a hot summer day. We really can’t seem to think of ANYONE who wouldn’t like this beer, besides someone who hates great food. Let’s take a sip, and then down the rest, shall we?

Beer Tip: Stiegl Radler comes in 3 different flavors.

Stiegl Radler pours seemingly innocent enough, just as another standard light beer. But take a whiff, and you will start thinking of a tropical getaway: heaps of citrus everywhere! Take a drink and you’ll think “is this really a beer?” and then you can’t help but fall in love with the perfectly sweet, delicately tart, citrus-bomb of a beer. The grapefruit seems to take the bitter flavor and replace hops, making for an interestingly balanced beer – which seems backwards on paper, but makes so much sense while you drink it. The back of the beer reassures you it is actually beer – you get a dry and refreshing pale malt flavor that leaves you wanting to take another sip.

Do yourself a favor and seek out this beer – you won’t regret it. Give your mouth a high five on a hot day: drink a Stiegl Radler rather than the plain ol’ same old.

The Beer Manager at Colonial Wines & Spirits, Little Rock agrees. So much so that he chose it as his Beer of the Month for May. In his words, “…with nice tart aromas and just the right amount of sweetness it’s perfect for great summer sippin’!”

I just tried this beer last night at Creegan’s in North Little Rock (think they will offer it soon). I agree… very refreshing… probably my new favorite!
